NAP Consistency and Local Citations: Why They Still Matter

What NAP (name, address, phone) consistency means, why mismatched listings confuse customers and search engines, and a simple process to audit and fix your citations.

NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. A citation is any place online where those details appear together — your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, a local news article, an industry directory.

NAP consistency means those details match everywhere. It sounds basic, and it is. That is exactly why it is so often neglected.

Why consistency matters

Customers trust what matches

If a customer sees one phone number on Google and another on Justdial, they wonder which is right — or call the wrong one and give up. An old address on a directory can send someone across town to a shop that moved two years ago.

Search engines connect the dots

Google builds its understanding of your business from many sources. When your details agree across the web, it is easier to be confident they are accurate. Conflicting information makes that harder.

What "consistent" means in practice

  • Name: the same real-world business name everywhere. "Sharma Sweets" shouldn't be "Sharma Sweet House" in one place and "Sharma Sweets & Namkeen Pvt Ltd" in another (unless that is your legal name and you use it consistently).
  • Address: the same structure and details. Small formatting differences ("Rd" vs "Road") aren't a big problem; different shop numbers, floors or pincodes are.
  • Phone: the same main number. If you change numbers, update every listing.

Your website, Google Business Profile and major directories should be identical. Everything else should at least be accurate.

Which citations matter in India

Focus on quality and relevance rather than quantity:

  • Core platforms: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook.
  • Indian directories: Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART (B2B), TradeIndia.
  • Industry platforms: Practo or Lybrate for doctors, Zomato and Swiggy for restaurants, UrbanCompany for home services, MagicBricks and 99acres for real-estate agents, MakeMyTrip and Booking.com for hotels.
  • Local sources: your chamber of commerce, trade associations, local news websites and community portals.

Fifty spammy directory listings are worth less than ten accurate, relevant ones.

A simple citation audit

  1. Write down your correct NAP exactly as it should appear. This is your master version.
  2. Search for your business name and your phone number on Google. Note every listing you find.
  3. Check the major directories listed above directly.
  4. Make a spreadsheet with the platform, the URL, what it shows and whether it matches.
  5. Fix mismatches by logging in, or by claiming the listing if you haven't yet.
  6. Remove duplicates where the platform allows it.
  7. Repeat every six months, and immediately after you move or change your number.

Special cases

You moved

Update Google Business Profile first, then your website, then every directory. Don't create a new Google profile — edit the existing one, so you keep your reviews.

You changed your number

Update everywhere, and keep the old number forwarding for a while if you can.

You rebranded

Change the name on your signage first, then update Google and directories with the new real-world name.

Old agency-created listings

If someone else created listings for you years ago, try to recover access through the platform's claim process. Keep a list of logins in a safe place, owned by the business.

Citations alone won't make you rank

Consistency is a foundation, not a magic trick. On top of it you still need a complete Google Business Profile, accurate categories, genuine reviews and a helpful website. Read how to rank higher on Google Maps for the full picture.

Check your Google listing first

Your Google Business Profile is the most important citation of all. Make sure your name, address, phone, hours and website are exactly right there first — then use it as the master copy for everything else. Your Locvanta AI report includes a consistency checklist for your type of business.
